I have an all-in-one J3680.  My computer at work by the fax (but not actually hooked to the fax machine) is a 64-bit Windows 7.

I have set the answering machine on 5 rings and the fax on 6 rings.  There is no distinctive ring.  I have the answer mode on fax but I have tried an anwer mode of "answer machine".  I have also reversed the rings to 3 for fax and 6 for machine.  When I call by phone I get the answering machine. When I had the rings for fax on three rings I got the fax squeal when the fax answered.  The fax test has everything passing.  However, when I try to fax from another fax machine the message is "busy" or "looking for line" from several different fax machines from several different places.  I had the fax machine hooked up last spring and it worked great.  I used up an entire ink cartridge.  Someone stole some CD's which included the all in one set up CD.  I have followed the directions that are in the manual.

Hi kmath,

This document is a good place to start.  The fax should be set to 'Answering Machine'.  Set the fax  to 6 rings and the answering machine set to 4 rings.  If you make the fax answer before the answering machine can, basically this cuts the answering machine out of the loop.

I did have done everything but the part about entering the fax number. I am not in my office today, but it is possible that is the problem except it ring along with my phone when I call from a cell phone.  I will check on the number under header when I get there tomorrow.  I am having my husband send a fax from his office in the next hour or so.  Hopefully it will work.

The secretary of our department sent a fax to my number and I ended up with 4 fax voicemails before she cancelled the fax.  The fax machine is not detecting the fax noise, but instead letting the answering machine continue.  The machine is set on fax for the device with 5 rings for answering machine and 6 for fax.  This is really annoying.  I will just disconnect the phone and try using the fax only and see if that helps at all.

Hi kmath,

This some information from the document I posted:

When using the printer with an answering machine:

The HP fax product does not automatically answer calls. The answering machine answers the call, and the HP fax product monitors the line. If the HP fax product detects fax tones, it automatically receives the fax. Otherwise, the answering machine records the incoming message.

Setting up the outgoing message:

When recording the outgoing message (OGM) on the telephone answering machine, the voice portion should be at least 10 seconds long, but no longer than 20 seconds. Record 5 to 7 seconds of silence at the end of the voice portion of the outgoing message. Consult the answering machine manufacturer manual for specific instructions on recording and re-recording messages. Record the outgoing message with minimal or no background noise as this can cause interference when the fax is eavesdropping on the telephone answering machine, causing the fax to not answer.

My voice message is about 2 seconds long with just my name so that could be the problem.  I will record a new OGM tomorrow and see if that works better.  Thanks!
