I have just connected a HP Photosmart C4400 to my mac mini with Mac OS X 10.6.2.
The printing is working fine but whenever I attempt to scan i get an 'unknown error' message.
I have tried reinstalling the software a couple of times to no avail.
Is there any way to get this all-in-one to scan?

From where did you install the software? If it was from the printer CD, it is for 10.5 and earlier only. Uninstall it in this manner:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Now, run a Software Update.
Next, remove and re-install the printer in System Preferences, Print & Fax.
You do not need the software now since Snow Leopard has both print & scan drivers built-in. Scan from Preview or Image Capture apps. Scanning from the front panel of the printer does not yet work.

I recently tried to install an HP Photosmart C4400 on a computer with Windows XP. It prints fine but won't scan to computer. I can scan to print however. I've tried removing and re-installing the software both from disk and from the HP website but get the same error. Any suggestions?

Why are you posting on the Mac board?
Download and install the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.
