No, you need to type in the IP address (not the MAC address) of the printer into a browser.

This is Raonaid's husband:  None of the tests printed gives an IP address. To bad I couldn't show you what is being printed out for you to show me where the IP address would be.

Did you try this from the front of the printer?:

Setup -> Network -> View Network Settings -> Print Network Configuration Page

Yes, and it does not supply an IP address. It states "Not applicable"

OK, the printer is not attached to your network.

Is the wireless radio on (blue light on front of the printer)?  If not, turn it on via Setup > Network on the front panel.

Also, please describe, exactly, your wireless setup.  If there is hardware associated with it, please tell me the make and model. Is any of it your hardware or is it all your ISP's?  What kind of ISP is it (Cable, DSL, cellular network, etc)?

Aha!  I should have asked this a long time ago.  Sorry.

SMC routers are "non-standard" and have problems with HP printers (among other things).  Here is how we should proceed:

  • Disconnect the SMC router from the internet by unhooking the cable to the router.
  • Power cycle the router (remove power, wait 30 seconds, apply power).
  • Power cycle the printer.
  • Run the Wireless Setup Wizard from the front panel (Setup > Network).
  •

Now, run a Network Config Test to get your IP address.

Open the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address.  Select Networking and then Wireless (802.11).  Under the IPv4 Configuration tab, select Manual IP:

    • For Manual IP Address, use the existing printer IP address plus an offset.  For example, if the printer's IP address is currently 192.168.0.5, then use 192.168.0.30.
    • For Manual Subnet Mask, use 255.255.255.0
    • For Manual Default Gateway, leave blank.  This is important.

    Select Manual DNS Server:

    • Leave both the Manual Preferred DNS Server and Manual Alternate DNS Server fields empty.  This is important.

    Press Apply.

Turn off the SMC wireless-router and reconnect the cable.  Now turn off  the printer and all computers connected to your network.  Wait 60 seconds then turn on the wireless-router and then turn on the printer.  Then turn on the computers.  You should be able to browse the internet while the printer is also on.

Finish up by installing the SW on the computers you want to print from (if they do not already have the software).  One more suggestion -- do not install the HP Customer Participation Program.

I was having this same problem (HP printer, Scientific Atlanta cable modem, and Netgear router).  This solution worked like a charm.  Thanks very much for posting it.

I was also having the same probem with a Netgear N750 router and hp printer 6500 wireless E 709 n (my posting 11-25--11). Just applied your solution and it works beautifully.

I think your solution shoud be posted on the HP Support site itself.

    Thanks a lot

Hi, I have a HP Deskjet 3520, which I originally was able to connect successfully wirelessly, via a Netgear CG3100D-2BPAUS series router. However, since last week, suddenly whenever the HP printer is turned on, the internet connection is disconnected (after 20 seconds). I have tried resetting the router to factory defaults, power cycling the router, power cycling the printer etc etc, running the wireless setup from printer's panel (which works, but then, disconnects from the router and the router goes off the net, in 20 seconds).

As I only recently purchased the printer, I took it back to the place of purchase and got a new one, in case the printer itself was faulty. Well, you guessed it, the new one does the same thing with the router.

I printed out the HP Network Configuration page off the printer and noticed the IPv6 information is blank (or has dots, where there probably should be characters - for both the Primary and Secondary DNS Server information).
