I have a Scanjet 5590 (L1911B) and it seems as if it's TWAIN functions aren't working properly, as it is not showing up in other software on my Mac, specifically "Image Capture", which supports scanners.

Normally I use "HP Scan" software (v2.4.3), which is the only software I have installed for the Scanner. Am I missing a driver? I am not interested in all the other HP Software for image editing etc.

How do I fix this?

Best,

Kim Johannesen

Did you ever have hp scanner software for 10.5 or earlier on your Mac, even if you later uninstalled it?  From your statement I'll assume not, but let me know.

Since the scan and print functions are integrated in 10.6, we could try to reset the printing system:

- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

No, I have never had another HP product (printer or scanner) installed on the Mac.

The solution you suggested did not work - I can't see why the scanner should show up in the printer/fax preferences anyway, as it is not an all-in-one product.

The printing and scanning functions in 10.6 are more closely connected than before.

OK, I assume this scanner is connected with USB?  Have you changed the cable?  Make sure you are NOT going through a USB hub, but directly into your Mac.

Have you restarted the Scanner and Mac?

The scanner is directly connected to the Mac, and both have been restarted/re-connected several times. Still doesn't work.

How about the USB cable, did you try a different one?  Also, the scanner could have failed.

Before we go there, let's make sure your software is OK.  It sounds like the scanner software is healthy and current.  I assume you keep up with Software Updates.

Just to be sure, let's install the 10.6.4 Combo update.  This is a comprehensive update from 10.6.0 to 10.6.4 and everything in between, in case something was missing or corrupted along the way.  Get it here.

I tried another USB-cable, same result.

Also, I have 10.6.4, so that's not the issue.

You may have 10.6.4, but you may not have every detail of every update since 10.6.0.  This Combo update provides that for you.  It won't hurt anything and may just fix the problem.
