If I am having printing problems, why should I reset my network?

Most of us are well aware of the miracles that can occur from a simple reboot when you are having computer problems.  The same is often true of wireless networks.  Over time the connections can become "cluttered" for lack of a better word.  A network reset will help create a clean connection among the devices on the network and can often solve problems.

When

Any time you are having printing problems with a wireless printer and:

  1. you have ruled out hardware issues,
  2. the print queue is clear, and
  3. running the  HP Print and Scan Doctor  did not help,

then resetting the network should be very high on your list of todo's especially if the printer was working fine recently and now it is not.

How

  1. Shut down your computer (not a reboot).  If the computer is trying to perform updates, let that happen and wait for those to complete.  For Windows 8 computers, hold down the "Shift" key when you click on the "Shut Down" button.  If you don't do that, the computer will go into hibernation and not do a complete shutdown.
  2. Unplug all cables from the printer including the power cord from the back of the printer while the printer is still turned on.  Unplug the other end of the cord from the power source.  If there is a power module on the power cord, disconnect one end.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the router for 20 seconds and plug it back in.
  4. When the lights are on on the router, turn the computer back on.
  5. When the computer is booted back up and you can access the Internet, plug the power cord into the power module (if applicable), plug the cord directly to a wall outlet ( not a surge protector or battery backup ), and then back into the printer.
  6. When the printer powers back up, send a print job to the printer and  see what happens.

Even if that didn't solve the problem, you will have a better connection that will be good for further troubleshooting.
