My HP Officejet 6500 wont feed my paper in! If the roller(s) that feeds it is damaged, what do I have to replace on it?

I can feed it one paper at a time with difficulty, but I need it to be working right. Thanks!!!

Hi AprilG,

Try to clean the feed rollers. Let me know if you are then able to get the printer to pull in the paper?

  1. Turn off the product and unplug the power cord.
  2. Open the access door to gain access to the rollers. Depending on the model, this is usually the rear access door. See the product user guide for information about locating the rollers.
  3. Clean the rubber rollers with a lint-free cloth, lightly moistened with water.
NOTE:Distilled, filtered, or bottled water is recommended for cleaning the rollers. Tap water might contain contaminants that can damage the rollers.
  4. Make sure that any paper rollers that rest on the input tray, which are located behind the back rollers, are cleaned. A clean cotton swab, lightly moistened with water, might be necessary to reach these rollers.
  5. Close the access door and plug in the power cord.
  6. Try printing again. If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.

Wondering if the 2 rollers that grab the paper could be damaged

Hi AprilG,

Yes, if they pulled the paper it could have messed up the homing position of the system. You can try resetting the printer using the following steps.

Press # and 6 while applying power

I tried the */6 combination, but that didn't help either. The pickup roller that drops down is definitely not rotating, so did a gear or belt slip such that it's not engaging? Any other options or things to check?

Thanks much in advance.

Sorry, I meant #/6.

Hi apstar,

Does the printer make any loud noises when it attempts to pickup the paper?

Follow the steps in the document below.

Hi, and thanks for your quick response. No, it's not noisy. However, using a mirror I can see the one gear that evidently engages the pickup roller mechanism is loose and slipping off the shaft. The other gear to the right (as you face the front of the printer) seems fine. It's clear that when the mechanism is running that the rollers in back are not engaging even though I can get the gears in front to turn, so I'm guessing there is something not meshing properly with the rollers themselves. Not sure how to get at them as it may be a similar issue. The printer is long out of warranty, so I have no qualms about any disassembly. Any additional advice would be most appreciated!
