I recently got a Macbook Pro 16" (MacOS Sonoma 14.3) and am trying to print some documents for the first time, using an HP Deskjet 2130 series (driver version 2.3), without success. I have an adapter which I connect to the thunderbolt entry of the laptop, and then connect the printer´s USB to the adapter.

The printer appears under the printers section with a green light and "idle" description. However, when I try to print a document, it does not work. The document briefly appears in the print queue and disappears.

I have tried to print using the HP Smart app too, but the app doesn´t even detect the laptop although connected through USB. I later tried to install the HP Smart Software and Drivers from "https://123.hp.com/gb/en/"  using my printer reference, but nothing seems to work. I can´t even print a test page after installation and following the steps.

Any guidance/help would be much appreciated!

Hi @Herry_25,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've taken some good initial troubleshooting steps. Let's see if we can resolve the issue.

First, let's ensure that the printer is properly connected and recognized by your Mac. Follow these steps.

  1. Disconnect the printer from your Mac.
  2. Restart your Macbook.
  3. Once your Macbook has restarted, reconnect the printer to your Mac using the adapter and USB cable.
  4. Check if your Mac recognizes the printer. You should see the printer listed under System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.

If the printer is recognized, try printing a test page to see if it works. If not, let's proceed with further troubleshooting steps.

  • Update your printer driver: Visit the HP website and download the latest driver for your printer model compatible with macOS Sonoma 14.3. Install the driver on your Mac and try printing again.
  • Reset the printing system: Sometimes, resetting the printing system can resolve printing issues. To do this, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, right-click (or Control-click) on the list of printers, and select "Reset printing system." Note that this will remove all printers from your Mac, so you'll need to add your printer again afterward.
  • Check printer settings: Ensure that the printer settings, such as paper size, orientation, and print quality, are correctly configured before attempting to print.
  • Check for firmware updates: Some printers require firmware updates to work correctly with macOS. Check if there are any firmware updates available for your HP Deskjet 2130 series printer and install them if necessary.
  • Test with another device: If possible, try connecting the printer to another computer or device to see if it works. This will help determine if the issue is specific to your Mac or the printer itself.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there may be compatibility issues between your printer and macOS Sonoma 14.3.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello @Alden4,

Thank you for the welcome wishes and for your assistance on the issue I am facing.

As to what you have suggested:
1. I did restart my Macbook. After connecting the printer USB cable to the adapter, the computer does recognize that the printer is connected, as I can see it listed under System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. It appears with a green light, and in "idle" mode. I tried printing a test page, and it did not work.

2. I installed the printer driver from the HP website for my printer model (it´s actually HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 2135, but it's detected as HP Deskjet 2130 whenever I connect through HP Smart after installing th driver). When I reach the "Add and Verify Your Device" section, I try to "Switch to the HP Driver" rather than "Use the Current Driver", but I get an error message stating "Cannot configure the device software. Go back to the previous step and try to install the software again." I have tried to install the software again, and tried printing a test page unfortunately without success.

3. I tried resetting the printing system as you suggested, added the printer again, tried printing, also did not work.

4. Checked printer settings, all is fine.

5. How do I check for firmware updates? If this is different from installation of the printer driver, I do need some guidance on this. Is there a specific site you could share to do this for my printer model?

6. I tried printing a document with my previous Microsoft Surface Laptop driver and my current printer, it did print the document I needed. It's just a nuisance having got a new laptop that is so advanced in terms of AI and graphics processing, but can´t even print a document, a simple task.

It sounds to me that this may indeed be compatibility issues between the printer and the Macbook.

Looking forward to hearing from you again.

Thanks and have a great weekend!
