Hi @bwnolan,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It's quite common for printers to periodically go offline, but this issue can usually be resolved with a few steps. Here’s a general procedure you can follow to get your HP LaserJet MFP M28-M31 back online:

Check the Connection:

  • Ensure the printer is properly connected to your network (if using Wi-Fi) or directly to your computer with a cable.
  • Verify that the network or cable is functioning properly.

Restart Your Printer and Computer:

  • Turn off your printer and computer.
  • Wait for a few seconds, then turn them back on. This can help reset any software glitches that might be causing the printer to appear offline.

Check the Printer Status:

  • On your computer, go to the Control Panel (if you are using Windows) or System Preferences (if you are using a Mac).
  • Navigate to 'Devices and Printers' or 'Printers & Scanners'.
  • Right-click on your HP LaserJet MFP M28-M31 and select 'See what's printing' or 'Open queue'.
  • If the printer is 'Offline', right-click on the printer and select 'Use Printer Online'.

Clear the Print Queue:

  • Still in the printer queue, cancel all documents if there are any stuck or in error.
  • Once the queue is clear, try printing a test page.

Check the Printer Software:

  • Ensure that the correct printer drivers are installed on your computer. You can download the latest drivers from HP’s official website.
  • Sometimes updating or reinstalling the drivers can help resolve connectivity issues.

Set as Default Printer:

  • Right-click on your HP printer in the list of devices.
  • Choose 'Set as default printer'.
  • Try to print something again to see if this resolves the issue.

Check for Printer Updates:

  • Visit the HP Support website and enter your printer model.
  • Check for firmware updates for your printer model and install them if available.

Network Troubleshooting:

  • If your printer is on a network, check the network settings and make sure the IP address is correct.
  • You can print a network configuration page from the printer settings or menu to verify network settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
