HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

HP Officejet Pro 7740 wide format.   Paper mismatch error message.

I have been through the settings numerous times without getting the printer to select tray 2 (A3).

I have spent 3.67 hours on the phone to HP support without any success. After the last time they suggested that I contact the computer manufacturer to find out why the computer would not let the printer properly. It is not a computer problem.

I found out through online search that there is a problem with Windows 11 and HP printers. They did not mention this at all. Trying to get someone at Microsoft to help is a waste of time. The problem only developed after a recent update of Windows 11.

I bought the printer because of its A3 capabilities. It may be time to get HP to replace the printer.

Hi @Suicidal1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to deal with this issue, especially when you've invested in a printer specifically for its A3 capabilities. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the paper mismatch error.

  • Check Paper Size Settings on the Printer: Ensure that the paper settings on the printer itself are correctly configured to recognize A3 paper in tray 2. You may need to navigate through the printer's menu settings to verify this.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Make sure your HP Officejet Pro 7740 has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve compatibility issues with operating systems like Windows 11.
  • Reinstall Printer Drivers: Completely uninstall the printer drivers from your computer and reinstall them. Sometimes, driver corruption can cause communication errors between the computer and printer.
  • Manually Select Tray 2 from Computer: In your computer's print settings, specify tray 2 (A3) as the paper source for your print jobs. This can often override any automatic paper selection issues.
  • Disable Windows Updates for Printer Drivers: While not an ideal solution, if you suspect that Windows 11 updates are causing the problem, you might consider temporarily disabling automatic updates for printer drivers until a permanent solution is found.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I have checked the paper settings on the printer. Tray selection was set to automatic. The paper description for each tray was correct. During the extended time I was on the phone to HP the drivers were deleted and reinstalled. On one occasion I had to get the reference to the software removed from the registry. All Windows automatic updates are turned off. I think this occurred during one of the HP sessions. I have to manually instigate Windows updates.

I am a little hamstrung at present as I am awaiting new ink supplies. With the extreme cost of genuine cartridges it is difficult to afford them. It is a pity manufacturers are not more cognizant of their pricing. For me it is nearly the price of the printer to get a replacement four pack.

I will try the manual tray setting when I next attempt to print.

The system is not letting me install the latest firmware update at present. No sure why. I will go a hunting to determine the reason.
