I confirmed that duplex is installed under "Devise Settings".
Under "Printer Shortcuts" I selected Duplex Printing and when I select the drop down box with the Off message, Automatic does not appear for me to select.
Also, when I click on "Finishing" I do not see the same screen that you sent for me to view
The option to print on both sides under "Document Options" does not appear
What does appear is "Pages Per Sheet & Posters".
What is interesting is that the duplex did work for me in the past with all of my current connections to the computer.
Is it possible that there is some driver recognition problem. If yes, how do I correct it?
I have a Windows 7, 64 bit system.
The screen shots I provided were for the Deskjet 9800 driver available through Windows Update on a Windows 7 x64 system. I am not sure what issue you are having, but you could try the following: go to Start, Devices and Printers and right click on the Deskjet 9800. Select Printer Properties, Advanced, New driver. Next click on WIndows Update and wait several minutes for the list to repopulate. Once it does select HP as the manufacturer and select HP Deskjet 9800 Series (HP), Next, Finish, Apply. There may be a question about whether you want to replace the current driver, if so say OK.

I followed your instructions and selected the HP Deskjet 9800 Printer (HP)
I clicked on Next
Then clicked on Finish
I recevied the following message - "Unable to install HP Deskjet 9800 Printer Type3 - User Mode, X64. Access is denied"
I repeated the steps and this time when I click on "Finish" the Wizard screen disappears and the dialog box reappears to select manufacturer and model
Any other suggestions??

This appears to be a problem with permissions. Try the process as a user with administrator privileges.

Worked perfectly with my HP Deskjet 6940dt Printer.on Win 7.
This solution should be easier to find on the HP support page since I used the HP Printer Install Wizard and the HP Print Diagnostic Utility. Both found the HP printer on my network but they but listed it as an HP Deskjet 6940 Printer with no Double-sided feature. Your solution should have been covered on one of those download pages.
Thanks,
John
OK, now that I have that duplexer working I have a question on the odd-numbered printouts. If I print an even number of pages I have no issue. When I print an odd number I get this troublesome result:
Page #1 is on one side with a blank page behind it.
Pages # 2 and 3 print back to back on one sheet. (And so on.)
Result:
Page 1 with a blank back,
Page 2 with page 3 behind it.
Page 4 with page 5 behind it. (and so on.)
If I force another page (blank, of course) after the last page (creating an even number of pages) then the print job is fine:
1 and 2, 3 and blank.
If I forget to add that blank page, or if I am printing a received document containing an odd number of pages, I always get a blank page behind page #1 which throws off the doublesided print job.
As in my earlier post which was resolved by Bob, I have an HP Deskjet 6940dt Printer.on Win 7, linked via router. Another computer on the same network uses Win XP and it prints fine to that same printer.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
John

I've been having problems duplex printing with Officejet Pro 8500. It is connected wireless & I am using Windows 7. The second page prints upside down even if I change the option to "flip on short edge." I have checked to see that Duplex printing is enabled. Please help?:)

If you are printing a document with an odd number of pages, after printing the odd numbered pages, remove the last page and set it aside. Put the paper back in the printer and print the even pages (on my Color LaserJet 8500 I put the stack into tray 1). That should get the pages printed properly. Add the last page and everything should be fine.

Thank you for attempting to help but I'm using an automatic duplexer.
This is not a question regarding manual doublesided printing.

Thank you but I am using an auto duplexer. I simply opened my printer properties and changed it from duplexer not installed to duplexer installed.
For some reason Windows 7 does not do that automatically when the printer is installed.

Just wanted to let you know that I solved my duplex problem by simply following the instructions in the attached web site. For some reason when I disconnected my printer to use the Wi Fi and then reconnected it later, Windows did not reinstall the duplex function.
I also learned that you can not download drivers for the HP 9800, since the feedback I received, after my search, informed me that the drivers already exist in the Windows 7 operating system.
So, I followed the instruction I found on the web for failed installation and I obtained the dialog box with Document Options to print on both sides.
