I bought it in 2005, which I guess in the tech world makes it an antique. Except for this little glitch, it works fine and still has plenty of ink.

Did you ever actually change the USB cable and/or ports on your Mac?

I bought my MacBook Pro laptop in 2010. I'm using a USB 2.0 cable for the printer, but I haven't upgraded the ports on the computer or changed the USB cable. Is there a faster version of the USB 2.0 cable available?

HP Recommended

No, there is no faster version but cables do fail and ports on the computer fail.  Get a new cable (or use one from some other device that works fine) and try it.  Plug it into different USB ports on your Mac.  If the new cable and all of the ports create the same result, then we can eliminate that from the list of potential causes.

I may try those suggestions when I return from overseas where I am now. It will be many months. However, it seems that if the ports or the cable were bad, I'd be having other problems besides just the printer's inability to run subsequent print jobs, no?

I have the same problem, have followed this and other suggestions. I recently bought the HP 2840 combo (had a 2820 combo whose gears went wrong). It works fine with Windows on the wife's computer, not on my mac. What's going on here....

I had the same problem after I upgraded to snow leopard , I have  a laserjet 3330.  After reading response below I pulled out the USB from the computer and reinserted and hey presto my computer now prints!

I'm baaaaack! . . . and I've tried printing and have the same problem with the "Waiting for printer to become available" message. Apparently a winter's rest wasn't enough for the printer ;-). I worked with an HP tech last fall on all kinds of solutions but nothing worked. I haven't replaced the printer cable, and I hesitate to spend any money on one since I feel strongly that it's not the problem. Everything else on the printer works fine.

Has there been any solution from HP on this? Any new suggestions? I don't want to go the whole summer with this problem.

No, sorry.  Try a different cable - maybe take one off another device.

I bought a new printer cable - 24K gold plated connectors! - seriously, I had no idea they made those. Better connectivity apparently. Anyway, installed it and . . . same problem.

It seems some people were helped by uninstalling the HP software and re-installing it, but I couldn't find the HP Uninstall program on my Mac. Could it be somewhere I haven't looked? Any more suggestions?
