Does anyone know how to NOT activate this every single time you want to scan? God forbid you try to scan from adobe first.... then you have to restart the grid to get everything to work. I wish they would disclose this crap FIRST before you buy an "easy all in one."

This worked for me.

1.  Connect USB cord from back of printer to computer.

2.  On printer, push Scan, Computer.

3.  Go to computer and follow this sequence.  START, ALL PROGRAMS, HP, CLICK ON HELP, SCAN, ACTIVATE SCAN TO COMPUTER.

4.  Press Scan on Computer, then quickly press COMPUTER on HP 6500A Plus.

Printer scans into computer, into folder, and you can save in various ways of your choosing.  Emailing did not work from this option.  I had to save as a PDF, open Google Mail to compose, then attach the file to the email.

Hope this helps.

Users have been complaining about this problem for more than a year, yet there is NO solution yet????  Does HP really believe consumers want to restart their printers and redo the Activate scan to computer EVERY time they want to scan something?  I really wish I would not have purchased this printer....

Kudos to  akuma6099

Was looking for a way to find the custom info, thanks for the post!
FYI- for my 6500A my shortcut has a slightly different name (E710n-z) and different device ID:

"C:\Program Files\HP\HP Officejet 6500 E710n-z\Bin\ScanToPCActivationApp.exe" -deviceID CN14P112BF05JW:NW -scfn "HP Officejet 6500A"

Yes. How about it HP ?

The whole scan to computer works flaky at best. And why is there no 'scan to network folder' option either? Would solve a lot of problems.

My problem is that the "Activate Scan to Computer" function fails on my Windows 7 machines.  It only works on my XP desktop.  It fails with the following message:

"Error launching the program.  The device was not specified".

I have tried this function on two Windows 7 machines, and it fails consistently on both of them.  Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks.

Is it connected by USB per chance?

HP Recommended

No, it is not connected by USB.  The All in One is an Ethernet printer, and I have it set up on my home network.  The networked printing function works perfectly from all the computers on my home network, yet the "Activate Scan to Computer" function only works on my one XP desktop.  It fails on all my Windows 7 laptops immediately.  It behaves as if it is expecting the All in One to be USB connected.
