@pcwizard

Perhaps I was a bit unclear before. Let me try again.

No.

I am not a simpleton and have of course the newest ,16 month old drivers running

@eddiepalmer. The whole point of this thread is to *not* use scanning software but scan direct from the printer to the pc.

@rkpayto: thank you.

I downloaded and ran it, it tells me to select the printer I want to update. My printer is listed, but I can not select it, it is greyed out?

thanx

Hi rkpayto,

Try running the firmware with the printer connected USB to the computer.

@pcwizard

what part of 'I have the latest software installed' is it that you don't understand?

I installed the usb cable, it installed some drivers. I ran the r1126a exe, it finds my printer but it is still greyed out. It says my status is up to date. The version is cip 1fn1126ar?

thanx

Hi realjax,

I am not asking you to do anything with the software. I am asking that you make sure the printer is upgraded to the latest firmware.

I set up my 6500APlus yesterday and after having many problems getting it working, I thought I had nailed it.

Its connected wirelessly to my Dlink DIR 655 router. The wireless connection is solid.  My iphone sees the printer. My PC (win7) sees the printer. I can print. I can scan by initiating it from the computer. Yesterday I could scan by clicking on the scan button on the printer and scanning to the computer.  Today, after rebooting my computer (it was off all night) I tried to scan to computer, and although the product control panel shows my computer name on the scan dialog, when I tried, I got a message saying the printer can't communicate with the computer. I turned of my firewall (zonealarm), still doesn't work. BTW, my local network is "trusted".

I redid the "active scan to computer" using the product page on the PC and now I can scan to the computer (until I reboot again).

I did check the firmware update in the printer control panel and it reports up to date.

Obviously, as everyone has pointed out before, it defeats the purpose if you have to do something on the computer first before scanning from the printer.

I notice that scores and scores of folks have the same issue.

What next?  I did see some workarounds on this forum, but it would be nice to have the complete solution.    Surely HP has an inkling on what to do and can post it prominently.    I'd call tech support as last resort but last two time I called it was more frustrating than problem resolving.

P.S. All together I have about 5 hours in mucking about trying to get this printer working properly. Rapidly approaching "back to store" time and ban HP products from ever darkening my doorway again.  BTW, I am technically literate.

The dialog box on mine is slightly different and doesn't have a check box to "automatically start scan from computer when I log into windows"activate scan to computer dialog
