I need to copy a piece from a music book, to mark it up for rehearsal. The book is thick enough that I have to leave the cover up. The first 6 pages copied OK, but now all I get is an alll-gray page. The light bar does not move; it sounds like it's stuck, but only when the cover is up. With the cover down (copying a single sheet), it works fine.

I figured it out! The diference between the copies that worked and the ones that didn't was the size of the paper I was using to mask unwanted material. For the ones that worked, the sheet extended over the light bar.
Apparently the light bar requires a white surface facing the flatbed, or it won't work.

are you doing this as black and white or color?
I work for HP but my posts and replies are my own thoughts.

Thank you so much for providing the solution to the non scanning problem, Top Student. I had almost given up and accepted all the answers that said the printer is now broken. Then I saw your solution, put some white paper over the light bar and am able to copy and scan!
