When I scan from the glass the image that is produced is a bunch of lines smashed together at the bottom of the page. 8 1/2 x 11 scan fine through the feeder though. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Does the same happen when a Copy job is done via the Scan glass?  If it does, it's likely the scanner is defective.

 

Contact HP for a replacement if the printer is still under warranty:
