I'm sorry you are having so many problems.  Regarding security software, I use Microsoft Security Essentials.  I find it lighter weight and less intrusive but still effective.  It's a free download from Microsoft: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials

Regarding your scan problem, do you have a webcam or other imaging device?  If you are tech savvy, can you export the registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} and attach the reg file to this thread?  If you are not tech savvy try uninstalling or disabling the webcam or other imaging device.  In either case, let me know the result.  Thanks.

Did it ever work?  Or has it not worked since day one?

I Just purchased this item yesterday printer works fine and I am set up wireless but when I go to scan it tells me 8600 not found

What OS are you running?  How did you install the printer?  Did you use the CD that came with the product or did you click the "add a printer" button in the OS?

I am running win 7 and installed the printer from the disc that was included.  Ty for trying to help me

I guess I asked a dumb question since win7 is in the title.  If you did use the "add a printer" button in the os, then scan will not work.  You should run the printer install wizard to verify that you are using the correct software.  You can get the printer install wizard here:

I am having the same issue, I used the script HPPIW to load basic drivers for Windows 7 when I try and access the scanner I get Scanner unreachable.  Printer works fine, I have tried many un-installs and re-installs still get the scanner errors everytime.

Printer works as does the fax just the scanner gives errors.  Computer is HP running windows 7 professional 64 bit, Anti virus software is Trend Micro ( have turned it off both firewall and protection when loading software, as well as windows firewall) The scanner can be accessed by another computer on the network (that machine is running Windows XP PRO).

My main issue is Scanner not being unreachable on Windows 7 64 bit machine.

The first thing to try is to restart the Shell Hardware Service and the WIA service in that order.  Go to Start and right click on computer.  Select manage from the drop down list.  Then click Services and Applications->Services.  Highlight Shell Hardware Detection and click start or restart in the upper left.  Then find Windows Image Aquisition and do the same.  Try and scan to see if this fixed the issue.

If that didn't work then I would uninstall Trend Micro.  There was as problem with Trend Micro Titanium that would block our scanning even if the firewall was turned Disabled.  The product had to be uninstalled in order for scanning to work.

Good Luck

1) Restarted Shll Hardware Service

2) Restarted WIA Service

a) Still unable to get scanner to be reachable

3) Downloaded hot fix for Trend Micro

a) still unable to get scanner to be reachable

4) Uninstalled Trend Micro Titanium

a) still unable to get scanner to be reachable

5) Uninstalled Officejet Pro 8600 software

6) rebooted computer

7) reinstalled Officejet software using HPPIW for windows 7 tool

a) still getting error screen that says scanner unreacable

😎 restarted both Shell Hardware and WIA services

9) ran scan diagnotic tool gets as far as WIA and stops, if I skip it get to the twain and stops.

Will reload trend micro and the hot fix so that the PC is secure, my subscription is getting close to end is there a anti virus software that does not have the issues that trend micro has?
