I'm sorry you are having so many problems. Regarding security software, I use Microsoft Security Essentials. I find it lighter weight and less intrusive but still effective. It's a free download from Microsoft: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials
Regarding your scan problem, do you have a webcam or other imaging device? If you are tech savvy, can you export the registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} and attach the reg file to this thread? If you are not tech savvy try uninstalling or disabling the webcam or other imaging device. In either case, let me know the result. Thanks.

One thing I noticed and not sure if this is part of the problem or not but in Looking at the drivers for the XP machine and the ones for the Windows 7 machine there was a difference:
XP Pro
c:\windows\system32\drivers\serscan.sys
c:\windows\system32\HPScanTRDrv_OJ8600.dll
c:\windows\system32\HPwia1_OJ8600.dll
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
c:\windows\system32\drivers\ksthunk.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\serscan.sys
c:\windows\system32\HPScanTRDrv_OJ8600.dll
c:\windows\system32\HPwia2_OJ8600.dll
When I run the scan diagnostic util I get an error on WIA on the windows 7 machine.

Hi jfl3,
Can you scan using the embedded web server?
Based on your registry dump it looks like your device is network connected with an IP address of 192.168.1.8. Type that address into you favorite web browser and the embedded web server for the product should come up. There should be a scan tab and you should be able to scan from it. Let me know if you can scan this way.

After the reset the other night the new IP address for this printer is now 192.168.1.4.
I pulled up the IP address and I could scan using webscan at first with Adobe Reader X loaded (along with the patch for a printing issue) however there was
no save option ICON visable (note: this would work on the XP machine using the same Adobe Reader X (with the patch for printing issues loaded also) it
allowed me the ability to save the document) then I deleted the Adobe Reader X on the windows 7 machine and downloaded version 9.5 to the machine and I could
then scan and have the ICON to allow you to save. So yes with webscan I can scan and save to the windows 7 machine, however I am still not able to do the
scan to computer even with the 9.5 version of adobe reader loaded.
I also tried on the windows machine using firefox rather than IE and still could not save with adobe X reader loaded.

I have the problem of not being able to scan from the computer. In reading the forum, I tried scanning from the website using my IP address and it works. Now, what can I do to have the scanning work from the computer? The basic printing works well.
I do have a brand new HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911a and I am using Windows 7. I have installed software from the CD and from the website with the same results.
Thanks, Ray

Have you tried the Scan Diagnostic Utility. That would be my first recommendation. You can download the SDU here:
