HP 8740W XT908UT
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I need to upgrade RAM from 4GB on a newly acquired HP8740W XT908UT (dual core i5, 560M) .  There is currently a 4GB module in the slot under the keyboard.  I'd like to upgrade the memory to help with SolidWorks performance.  I'm finding conflicting info across the internet with maximum RAM capacity claims from 8GB to 32GB.

I know I can go to 8GB, but for a couple bucks more a 16gb (8x2) upgrade would be awesome.

Can I install 16GB?

Will the laptop recognizing/utilize it all

Stability or heat concerns?

If so, please reommend the right memory modules.

Thanks

Sorry @NEW2PC but you are limited because of the "Dual Core i5-560M"

Your manual here.

Here is the Manual:

Manual

See p. 2. Dual core models max at 8 gigs or 4 + 4.

See p. 60 for expansion memory "how-to". I believe your model is only going to have one expansion slot (see how the second one is "shadowed" in?) and it is DDR3-1333.

4096-MB memory module (PC3-10600, 1333-MHz, DDR3) 599092-001

8 gigs (4 + 4) is going to be a significant upgrade. The first gen dual core Intel Core machines max at 4 gigs per slot. I do see that there is an 8 gig module available but it appears to only be useable for Quad Core machines. That would imply they could take 4 x 8 = 32 gigs but that seems doubtful.

Hi:

I will also add in my 2 cents here, and request you to read this discussion.

Your memory type and brand choices are extremely limited.

Actually Huffer it was one of your posts that had me convinced I could upgrade to 16GB:

Re: Base Model with only 2 RAM slots will not upgrade to 8GB RAM, only 6GB?[ New ]

Quad Core versions have 4 RAM slots and Dual Core have 2 slots. Max 32 gig and 16 gig respectively. Try the reslotting and let us know how it goes. The 8 gigs should definitely be OK assuming compatible. If trouble persists please provide manufacturer part numbers for both modules.

And then I found this at HP.com  telling me I could could could go to 32GB  :

But I'll err on the side of safety and go with 8GB.  Thanks all for pointing me in the right direction.
