I just picked up a HP Z620 from Ebay and the power supply is quietly cracking. I put my ear up to the PSU and it's definitely that.

I'm not sure if I should send it back and hope to get a better one from the IT resser? I guess it's an end of lease workstation. I'm defitnitely not sure about leaving it switched on and working while I'm away.

If you are sure that is where the noise is coming from, why not just replace the PSU?

You can get an 850 W Gold PSU for $80-150.00 from Newegg.com. I suggest going with the Seasonic, Corsair or EVGA PSU, definitely not a Rosewill.

Should I be worried about the noise?

Also are these new PSU's a better option than an original HP 623194-001, or updated HP 717019-001 in my Z620?

You will need to get a ATX to 18 pin adapter to use those ATX power supplies. There is also the question of physical compatibility in the case - they fit in the Z420 but Z620 has a different style PSU.

is the crackling really an issue?
