It sounds like the display brightness might be too low. If you're unable to see the letters while entering your laptop password, try increasing the display brightness. 

 

On most laptops, you can do this by pressing the "Brightness Up" key, usually located on the keyboard. It's often represented by a sun icon labeled "F1" or "F2." If you're using an external monitor, check the brightness settings on the monitor as well.
