Sound doesn't come when earphones are attached to laptop

Assuming the earphones/headphones work, then it is typically a mismatch on the earphones/headphones jack verses the plug/jack on the laptop.

The second picture is typical when the earphones/headphones have a microphone included while the first one is typical with no microphone included.

 

Depending on the laptop's jack.  What model number laptop is yours?
