My HP Pavilion will not restore factory image. All attempts result in a variation of "hard drive failure". Details below.
What is error code 311?
Is this a motherboard, permanent failure?
Running Hardware diagnostice test at boot up results in:
S.M.A.R.T Test - Failed Error code - 311
All other diagnostic checks are "Passed"
I've tried different sata ports for the original drive. I've also attempted a replacement SATA drive but no difference.
My BIOS version is 7.x
What is error code 311?
Is this a motherboard, permanent failure?
Thank you for your help!

SMART is Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology it test the hard disk on your computer it is not motherboard failure.

Hard drive failure means the drive needs replaced. The error code list is:
Hard Disk 5 Quick Test Failure 311
If you have tried a different drive with the same results, it could be the controller.
You can use a bootable addon controller to try a fix, otherwise the motherboard needs replaced.
