Pavilion HPE h8-1100z
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When first starting the computer, startup gets to the black screen with the blue Windows logo and quits. If I hold the start button down until the computer cuts off; then restart the computer, it will go through the start up and work fine.  Having to go through this process frightens me.  What do I need to do?

I have had this computer for approx 2 years.

Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

You are actually starting the PC using two very different methods.

When you simply shut down the PC and turn it back on, that is Restarting the PC, and is known as a Warm Start.

When you hold the power button in until the PC shuts down, and then turn it back on, that is a full Shutdown and is known as a Cold Start.

This is IMPORTANT because Microsoft, in Win10, implemented a new form of hibernation, known as Fast Startup, that takes place in a Warm Start.  This is SUPPOSED to speed up restarting the PC, but in some cases, it can fail -- as is happening to you.

What some folks have done is DISABLE Fast Startup and, although the PC then takes longer to start, the good news is that it DOES start -- every time.

There are two ways to disable FastStartup in Win8/10; (1) through the Control Panel, and (2) through an elevated command prompt.

Control Panel - Open Control Panel --> Power Options.
Select "Choose what the power buttons do"
Select "Change settings that are currently unavailable"
At the bottom of the Window, under Shutdown settings, uncheck the box regarding fast startup

Elevated command prompt - run the following command:
REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Power" /V HiberbootEnabled /T REG_dWORD /D 0 /F

In both cases, reboot Windows.

NOW, FastStartup is disabled.

Good Luck
