Can't play Blu Rays with HP DVD Play BD & HD DVD software

I have a Pavillion m9060n desktop running Vista. Running HDMI on a Samsung monitor. It used to play Blu Rays on the rare occassion that I tried it, now it won't. I've gone through the update procedure via Cyberlink and now I'm stuck at this:

"Do you want to activate your player now" flashes on the screen and the program shuts down. This happens on multiple discs.

I've reinstalled the DVD Play software, run the Cyberlink BD & 3D Advisor and it passes. I tried reading a BD that I ripped to my hard drive, video plays but there's no sound, most likely due to the fact that there is no longer an HMDI sound option in the DVD Play menu.

For test purposes I download the Cyberlink PowerDVD 10 trial and everything works fine which should rule out a hardware issue.

Re: Can't play Blu Rays with HP DVD Play BD & HD DVD software

Hi Brad,

The HDMI option was removed from the audio menu recently, however you should be able to select S/PDIF to have it route the audio through your HDMI port.

Regarding the activation message, are you launcing the software from the start menu, or through windows media center?

Re: Can't play Blu Rays with HP DVD Play BD & HD DVD software

I get no sound with either of the two S/PDIF settings with the ripped Blu Ray. It does work fine with PowerDVD 10. When I'm attempting to look at an actual Blu Ray disc the activate question flashes and the program shuts down.

My PC is set up to launch DVD Play when I select a DVD. I'm not using Windows Media Center

Re: Can't play Blu Rays with HP DVD Play BD & HD DVD software

You mentioned that you reinstalled DVD Play already.  Did you fully uninstall it before reinstalling it?  If you install it and don't run the update procedure, do your discs play?  At this point we should just troubleshoot using the actual blu-ray discs, and not a rip.

Re: Can't play Blu Rays with HP DVD Play BD & HD DVD software

I'm pretty sure I did before as I was instructed to do by the recovery process. I just tried it again and it says it reinstalled, I reboot and the program is not there. Could PowerDVD be causing it not to recover?

Re: Can't play Blu Rays with HP DVD Play BD & HD DVD software

It's possible, but I'm not too familiar with PowerDVD itself.  Are you using the Recovery Manager to try and reinstall HP DVD Play?  Details on how to use it are here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00834921&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en

If you are using the recovery manager, then I would suggest uninstalling powerDVD and trying to reinstall HP DVD Play again.

Re: Can't play Blu Rays with HP DVD Play BD & HD DVD software

I just installed the free trial today. I'd need to know what will happen if I uninstall it... could it be reinstalled under the same trial?

Maybe one of the HP experts can chime in. I can play Blurays fine with Cyberlink's software, I can't with HP's version of it.

I have version 2.51 7029 (standard) of DVD Play.

Re: Can't play Blu Rays with HP DVD Play BD & HD DVD software

Actually, I am one of the experts helping out on the forums today.

PowerDVD does share some components with HP DVD play so it's quite likely that there may be some conflicts.  I would recommend uninstalling both the HP DVD Play software, and cyberlink powerDVD.  Then reinstall just HP DVD Play.  When you first launch it, do not perform the update.  Check to see if your bluray discs play.  If they don't, then try updating the software (you can tell it to check for an update via the menu).

Cool, I couldn't tell by your signature.

I'll give that a try. Thanks.

Re: Can't play Blu Rays with HP DVD Play BD & HD DVD software

I removed PowerDVD and now DVDPlay reinstalled. It works with regular DVDs as usual but fails with Blu Rays. It asks if I want to update and if I say no it keeps me in a loop asking if I want to update.
