How do you know if your CD/DVD burner uses CD +/- or DVD +/- disks? RE: +/- is my issue

Hello: I have a HP Pavilion dv4i-2100 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC purchase in April 2010 with and up date script writer CD/DVD burner.   I am using Win 7.

How do you know what CD or DVD (+/-) is the best to use?  Can you use either one (+/-) or just one (+ or -).  What works the best and where can you find out on the computer what to use.  The manual doesn't give me anything.  Can someone explain the difference etc.  I also know there are script CD and DVD's..  Regular discs are cheaper at the current time.

Thank you.

DVD+R media is the best to use with newer equipment.  Use quality media like Verbatim and skip the cheap stuff.

DVD and CD  r/w (wite many and read many) media is good for testing purposes.
