Pavillion 550-142d
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello

I have a Pavilliion 550-142d which I wish to upgrade to provide a better gaming experience. The pre-installed card in the Pavillion is GT 730 which is not made for gaming purpose.

The graphic card I'm intending to buy is either the GTX950 or GTX 1060.

I have done the necessary research on upgrading the graphic card.  But I only discovered recently that I will need update the BIOS when changing the GPU.

What are the precautions or steps that I should take in terms of updating the BIOS to support the new graphic card?

I have just finished replacing my power supply unit successfully to 550w today. The only problem I encountered was I didn't have a slim-SATA to power the built-in DVD drive. I intend to get a slim-SATA adapter eventually.

I will proceed to purcahse the graphic card soon, please advise me on the BIOS support as I understand HP has a built-in program to monitor and update any driver accordingly. As such I'm concerned if the GPU card support is in place.Currently I do not have any other NVIDIA program installed to update the GPU card.

Thank you.

Hello

Thank you for your concerns.

I have identified my BIOS as version A0.13 (Dec 2015) and the latest version available is A0.16 (Aug 2016).

Do I need to update the BIOS before or after changing the component?

As I'm planned to change the GPU, my only concerned is if I will have a proper display on the monitor were I to run the update after the upgrade. Please advise.

Thank you for your help.

Regards

On the specs page there are 2 contradictions, so please clarify.

The listed products specs lists WIN 10.  The Software and Drivers page on lists only WIN 8/8.1 and the only available BIOS with 8/8.1 is  8.21 Rev A,   dated Jun 2015.  You can not upgrade to that Rev with WIN 10.

Encountered problem with BIOS.  Read this on Secure Boot issues.

 Thank you for your response.

I'm sorry but your answer is a bit confusing to me so please bear with me. When you say product, you are referring to the HP pavillion?

My HP pavillion was bought this year so I believed it was pre-installed with a native Win10. It wasn't upgraded from Win7/8 to Win10.

As for the software and drivers page, the one I found for my HP pavillion shows the last BIOS updates for Win 10 was 5 Aug 2016. The driver updates are shown in the link below:

http://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Pavilion-500-Desktop-PC-series/8499648/model/8697...

Finally, I'm unable to view the link on problems encountered with BIOS as I do not have sufficient privileges.

I hope this helps you understand my concerns better now, I appreciated any help on this. Thank you.

You have done an excellent job, and provided links.  Yes, the BIOS should be upgraded to the newest version ( is corrects a flaw in the older BIOS).  Read about Secure Boot.
