HP Phoenix 860st
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I  purchased this PC in March and it has always had a low buzzing/crackling sound eminating from inside the unit.  I recently hooked it up to an Oculus Rift and the sound magnified tenfold or more.  Here's link to a video from my phone showing the sound with the computer idle.

The sound is extremely annoying and unbearable when hooked up to the Rift.  It appears to me to be a problem with the graphics card.  The graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970.  The ssytem is supposed to be VR compliant.

We are using Dell PC's at work, running Nvidia GeForce GTX 980's.  They are quiet as can be.  No buzzing or humming at all even when hooked up to the Rift.   Perhaps I made a mistake in opting for the HP for my home system.

After a lengthy review and negotiation with HP, my system was completely replaced. I'm told it was in fact the liquid cooling system and that it could not be repaired due to part unavailability. The new system operates quite well.

Its really hard to tell in that video where its coming from. It sounds like from the hard drive. But, most likely just a echo down there from some where else. When you received it. I would have sent it back if you heard it from the start. Now if you can pin point exactly where the sound is coming from.

You will most likely have the answer. From the video I heard. Few things it could be 1 of. Faulty pump, hard drive, video card or psu. Wish I could tell you for sure. But, its so hard to tell in that video. Okay. I have watched it 3-4 time now trying to listen where it is coming from.

I am 99.9% sure that is the sound of a faulty pump and that is where its coming from. If not. GPU for sure. Pretty convined though it is the pump from the liquid cooling solution. You just got unlucky and it happens. Trust me. Their liquid cooling solution is extremely reliable. They even use them in their business desktops. That is how reliable they are.

Thanks for the input.  I haven't had time to contact support yet but hope to do that this week.  You are correct that it is very difficult to tell exactly from where the sound is emanating, and I'm in looking right at the components.   Hopefully you are correct that it is a pump issue.  I'll let you know.

I too have an HP-860ST that I purchased earlier this year. I beleive the noise comes from an impellor in the liquid cooling system for the microprocessor. I've worked with HP to isolate the problem but it caused another problem which required returning the system to HP for repair. Now that I have the computer back the noise is still there.

I believe I may have found the problem, at least with my system. My liquid cooling pump is an Astek. I went to thei rsite and found the problem may be due to air in the cooler. By moving the computer system around I was able to reduce and finally get rid of the noise. See the Astek site for details: http://www.asetek.com/press-room/media/videos/2013/how-to-quiet-a-noisy-asetek-liquid-cooling-pump/
