I am a complete rookie at memory upgrade issues. What is the ultimate purpose in everyday, non-gaming use, of upgrading RAM from 2GB to 8GB? I have an HP Compaq8200 Elite USDT PC, and I would like to do this upgrade because I have been TOLD that performance SPEED would improve. Is this likely?

QUESTION: What Operating System are you using??
IF it is 32-bit, no improvement can be realized -- maximum usable memory ~ 3.5 GB

Response was very helpful! I am using a 32 bit version of Windows 10 Home Edition, with 2 GB of RAM, and a 64bit processor. What I see on the MS website indicates I can upgrade to the 64 bit version for free, but will I have to do my memory upgrade to 8GB of RAM before this change, or can I do the changeover to the 64 bit first then upgrade the memory?
