My HP TouchSmart will no longer power on. I had not shut it down or restarted it the night before, but when I went to use it the next day, it was off and would not power on. I took it to the Best Buy Geek Squad and they tried another power cord. The on button blinked a little, but then went out. The geek said that the internal power source probably needed to be replaced, but there's no guidance in hp.com on how to do that.
Please advise what I should do to get this repaired. Even if I need to get a new computer, I have files on here that I'd like to recover.
Thanks

Hi @lkgoins
Thanks for the reply.
I'm unhappy that you were unable to find the information how to replace the power supply.
I recommend you to search on youtube and you will find many videos on how to replace the motherboard and I am sure it will give you a fair idea how to replace it.
To answer your question on the data, you can certainly take a backup of the data as you have mentioned that the issue is only with the power supply. If the hard drive on the computer is fine then I am sure your data should be intact.
I assume that the computer is not powering on now, so I recommend you to pull out the hard drive from the computer and connect it to a working computer and see if it is getting detected.
If the hard drive is fine it should get detected without any issue and you can backup all your data.
Hope that answers you the question.
Take care.
Cheers!

You can download the service manual for your computer from www.hp.com and follow the instructions to replace the power support.
You can also contact HP phone support and they will help you with the available service options for your computer.
Follow the steps below to contact phone support.

Thank you very much for your reply.
The User Guide did not specify how to replace the power supply.
When I called the support number, they said that since my computer was > 4 years old, they'd have to charge $59.99 to so diagnostics and then charge about $200 to make the repair. Then they offered me a replacement computer.
I was told the exact same thing by Best Buy and Staples.
Not sure what I'll do. At this point, I want to get my data off of my hard drive. Do you think that'll be possible if the power supply is shot?
Thanks!
