I’d like to upgrade my WD 520 256 ssd. Will a WD Black NVMe m.2 1T with heatsink fit?

This is going to be very interesting. According to HP, the M.2 socket is key M.  That alludes to PCIEx4 NVMe speed.  But your existing WD NVMe is a B+M device, and operates only at the PCIEx2 speed.   The upgrade you want is a PCIEx4 M.2 key M.  That said, you should not have a problem.  Expect a 200% increase in performance based on the transfer rates of the individual devices.   How to distinguish b+m and m keys    What is the difference and compatibility

Accomplishing this upgrade is complex. from "what is the difference.....". The B and M module can plug into a B or M socket, but a B or M module can only plug into a matching B or M socket.

1) The new M keyed device can only plug into a M keyed socket.  That would require an MVMe key M external adapter to USB 3.0.  If you wanted to use the USB3.1 C port get an adapter for it.  A M.2 NVMe key M to USB3.1 C would transfer data at 1250MBps.  (Future reference when you have the swap completed). Then you could clone the entire 256GB onto the 1TB device.  After the clone, you swap out the devices. If all is successful (which it should be) you now set.

2) Put the old 256GB away for 30days. (Just me being me).

3) After the waiting period, you put the 256GB into the adapter.  After the unit is at desktop you attach the adapter. You can now safely format the 256GB device.  It makes a handy tote-alone 256GB device.

Will the WD black with heatsink physically fit?  I can’t find anything that insures comparability with my Rother motherboard.
