I got a 1TB SATA M.2 from Western Digital (Blue PC SSD) and a M.2 SSD to SATA NGFF 2.5 inch Convertor. When I put this into my Z230 it won't boot. I have added a cruxial 1TB 2.5 inch SSD SATA before which is working fine.

Any suggestions what is going wrong here?

The only known compatible SSD type for your HP Z230 Workstation is the SATA 2.5" type.

There could exist an incompatibility with the controller type that the M.2 SSD has.

What is the complete product information, including it's Western Digital part number.

On the box there are a few number:

WB Blue PC SSD 1 TB SATA M.2 2289,

WDS100T1BOB-00AS40

SN: 164471447641

If there is more you need, please let me know.

Thanks.

What is the brand of the PCIe adapter?

Are you saying that when it is plugged in that the PC won't boot up at all?

The convertor is from JUSTOP

Model No HDC - M2C25SA

and yes the computer won't boot at all.

Does it happen if the adapter is plugged in even without an M.2 SSD connected to it?

I would suspect that the adapter has issues.

I have never heard of a Justop product.

You might need to consider a mainstream brand instead.

I use an ASUS Hyper M.2 x4 PCIe adapter. I have never had any problems while using it.

When I look at the images for the adapter you suggested I am unsure how to install that one into my Z230. Do you have a link to a video showing this? The adapter I got turns it into 2.5 SATA SSD which I know how to fit.

It fits into a PCIe slot just like a video card does. It is quite simple and intuitive.

There is a slot on the adapter card just like in a motherboard ythat has an M.2 slot.

Remove the screw and slide in the M.2 SSD.

Put the screw back in to hold the M.2 SSD in place.

Now it is just a matter of puttin the adapter card in an available x4 slot, which your motherboard does have.

See the following Z230 manual on page 4. http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/action.process/public/psi/manualsDisplay/?s...

What is a 4x4 slot - or in other words: where does the adapter go? I know how to get the M.2 installed into it, but not how to get that into the computer.

HP Recommended

a PCIe x4 slot.

Your PC has a PCIe x16 slot for the video card.

Click on the link I provided and look on the page I mentioned.

Are we speaking the same language?

There are remove and replace videos at the following link. Use the Expansion card remove\replace selection to see it in video.
