I want to put a second hard drive in my laptop can I simply remove the CD drive and install a second hard drive there in place of the CD drive.

You asked if can be done "simply" -- and that answer depends on your finding an HSS/SDD case that matches the size and ports of the optical drive case.  I know such things used to exist long ago because I had such a case for a removable HDD  that I used with my Fujitsu laptop.

When you remove the optical drive, you will see what I mean -- as that case has the SATA and power connectors in the back of the case. You would need a case of the same size, with the same connectors, to install an HDD or SDD in its place.

Here is the Service and Maintenance Guide for your PC: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05122688

The optical drive removal instruction start on page 35.

Good Luck
