Dear Forum,

A big 'Thank You' for @Friddle who identified a compatible 500-watt power supply for the HP EliteDesk 800 G4/G5 SFF!

Just installed the 500-watt power supply with p/n: L77487-003, and my system powered up without any issues.

This power supply comes with 2 x (6+2)-PCIe power cables, which aren't needed and tucked away, because my eGPU is powered by a separate, synced 850-watt ATX power supply.

This PSU also sports the ubiquitous HP-proprietary 7-pin "P-2" power connection, with wire color coding: black, black, black, black, black, empty, black. Yes, all power cables, both small and large, are black.

And, of course, the 4-pins "P-1", "P-3", and an additional "P-4" power cable, which is not needed for this desktop:

So far, so good: it's now waiting for the i9-9900KS and see how that goes!

Hello,

Is it possible to fit non HP cpu coolers on an elitedesk motherboard? As long as it’s LGA 1151 compatible and physically fits the space restraint.

I’m looking for something cheaper to cool my cpu. The liquid cooled omen aio is a bit out of my price range. And non HP coolers are quite cheap.

I'm tempted to cut a hole for the cooler like the hole for the gpu.

Also the RAM you recommended arrived. It’s working well at 2666mhz now.

many thanks, Friddle

@Friddle,

Excellent!  -Glad to hear that your new RAM is working well.

I don't see any issues whatsoever to use non-HP CPU heatsinks.  I purchased/experimented with a few myself, but in the end either used OEM HP heatsinks or modified them to make them fit.

Kind Regards,

Dear Forum,

Took a while, but the Intel i9-9900KS arrived:

I will be out of town for a week, so installation will have to wait until I get back.

Hello,

I've tested my CPU using IPTD and used Speccy to watch the core temps.

Prime number and math were the two that peeked the most, both getting cores to 88-90C. This is using the 810281-001 heatsink with an exhaust fan.

I have just ordered the ID-COOLING SE-207-XT SLIM, which is a 220W slim (not low profile) air cooler. I will need to modify my case panel around the cooler but once it arrives I will test it without the panel cover.

This should cool just fine as long as enough air is able to move.

Many thanks, Friddle

@Friddle,

That is one 'cool' looking heat sink/cooling fan combo!

Hello,

I’ve installed the new heatsink and it’s working great. IPDT prime number and math peaked at 71C and the heatsink runs very quiet under load even if it’s half out of the case. I’ve attached a photo of what this looks like.

I don’t believe I’ll be doing any more hardware upgrades on this computer, the rest should be small software tweaks and making the computer look a little better.

Thank you for all the help, Friddle

@Friddle,

Awesome -a very nice heat sink mod, will definitely keep that in mind! Thank you for posting pictures!

Dear Community:

Installed the Intel i9-9900KS (TDP: 127 watt) and it worked A-OK!

Even without an OMEN Obelisk AIO liquid CPU cooler (p/n: L51046-001) which I purchased in case this high TDP processor required better cooling.  As it is, the 95-watt HP heat sink with p/n: L04397-001 (L30413-001) "HP Heatsink Gen Intel 95W Ent18 S / HP SPS-HEATSINK INTEL95W ELITEDESK800 G4 SFF" keeps the temps down to acceptable levels.

As far as I can ascertain, this is the first time -at least reported, that this bad boy was tried out in an HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF:

[EDIT:] As you can see after this Intel i9-9900KS performance rerun [09/20/2023], based on the "Gaming", " Desktop" and "Workstation" scores this platform should rank #3 or #4:

Anyway, for those hobbyists who want to get the most processor bang for their hard-earned bucks, I would recommend an i9-9900K or i9-9900KF, or even an i7-9700K or i7-9700KF for this particular desktop.
