SATA II verses SATA III performance

[ Edited ]

If you are considering buying a PC with SATA III support or adding a SATA III (6.0) adapter and installing a SATA III hard drive then you might be interested in my experiences.

Environment:

DYI PC

Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 ---1155 socket

Chipset: Intel P67

Processor: Intel i7-2600k ---> standard clocking

Memory: 16 GB OCZ 1600 DDR3

SATA ports:  4 SATA III 6.0 Gb/s and 4 SATA II 3.0 Gb/s

Hard drives: Hitachi 7200 RPM 1.5 TB 64 MB cache SATA III (6.0)

SSD: OCZ Vertex 3 120 GB SATA III (6.0)

Operating system: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

Measuring tool: HD Tune 2.55

Below you will observe four runs of HD Tune. Two runs were with the hard drive and SSD connected to a SATA III (6.0) ports and two runs were connected to SATA II (3.0) ports.

Conclusion:

  • The SATA II (3.0) interface maxs out with the Vertex 3 SSD and greatly limits the Vertex 3 performance.
  • The SATA II (3.0) interface is equal in performance to the SATA III (6.0) interface for the Hitachi hard drive.
  • The Hitachi hard drive is one of the fastest hard drives that I have used.
  • The OCZ Vertex 3 is the fastest SSD on the market today.
  • Hard drives today still have a long way to go to even get close to the maximum SATA II (3.0) interface rating.
  • An extremely fast SATA III (6.0) rated SSD is held back on a SATA II interface.

Thanks for sharing your experience and statistics. The performance of the VERTEX 3 on SATA III is impressive,
