hp slimline s5120f video card upgrade

[ Edited ]

I am planning on upgrading the video card on my slimline, I was told on yahoo answers that I could fit a ATi Radeon 6570 in there and my computer only uses 100 watts as it is, I am not sure if this was correct information on his part so I came here for someone to clearify on that before I make my purchase. The slimline has a 220W PSU and I found on another site that the ATi Radeon takes up 45W on a full load.

If you need additional information please ask, I will reply!

Thanks,

Mike

Re: hp slimline s5120f video card upgrade

Hi Mike,

AMD advises to use the 6570 with a psu of at least 400W

http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/amd-radeon-hd-6000/hd-6570/pages/amd-radeon-hd-6570-...

However, I came across this forum thread where another user managed to install a 6570 in a 220w psu.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/324648-33-asus-radeon-6570-profile-computer-220w

I wouldn't be able to tell whether this card will fit in your current casing. The best is to open your casing, measure the length of free space along the pcie16 slot and find out the dimensions of the card you are trying to purchase.

Re: hp slimline s5120f video card upgrade

Hmm ok I will open the case and see how big the slot is, I am not good with desktops so I hope I can figure it out, I will reply when I get it open and see how much free space there is for it. But as I researched that guy's computer on that thread it is really small case like mine so I imagine it'll fit but will double check to be sure.

And can you clearify if my slimline only runs at 100watts according to the guy on Yahoo Answers?

Hey I managed to get into the case, I took a few pictures as I didn't have anything to measure how much space there is, I might be able to do that tomorrow. But here is the pictures.

As you can see in the picture the PCI slot on the motherboard there ( I believe that's it ) with the cord going overtop of it, there is quite abit of space in there.

Awaiting your reply,

Mike

Re: hp slimline s5120f video card upgrade

Hi Mike,

I can't clarify how much Watts your psu has available to spare. I'm basing my opinions solely on the external forum link I provided earlier.

Therefore, I can't guarantee that the 5670 will work with your pc since I didn't try it personally.

Re: hp slimline s5120f video card upgrade

I saw this thread as well

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110626203457AAZqSy7

In it, a radeon 5670 is not advised to be installed on a 220 psu

Re: hp slimline s5120f video card upgrade

Here's another thread advising against putting a 5670

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/319668-33-radeon-5670-220w

What's the reason for installing a discrete graphics card in your pc?

Re: hp slimline s5120f video card upgrade

[ Edited ]

Well I did more research to let my heart go on the 6570, so I read on with the ATi Radeon 5570, supposivly it'll run Dirt-3 on Med-Max settings which thats a powerful game and I believe it'll play the games I'd like to.

So this card is 39 max wattage (5 less than the 6570) according to this one site, do you think I can run it?

http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/ati-radeon-hd-5000/hd-5570/Pages/hd-5570-overview.as...

I think in one of the links you provided the guy with a 250w PSU was going to put in an ATi Radeon HD 5570 1GB the one I selected is alot less watt comsumtion for 512mb.

So what do you think Neon?

-Mike

ATi Radeon 5570 512mb

Max Power - 39 Watts

ATi Radeon 5570 1024mb

Max Power - 85 Watts

Re: hp slimline s5120f video card upgrade

Hey sorry for continueing to bug you Neon you got me a lot furthur in this journey.. I was just wondering if I upgrade my PSU to 320w from eBay will it run the 5570? I can get a 400w too but its $75 which is over my budget I am hoping to only spend $70 and below on a video card and $55 on a PSU.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Pavilion-s5260f-s5120br-s5237kr-s5120f-power-Supply-/320745753551?pt=PCA_...

Check that out do you think this is legit, I am not good with PSU prices, so IDK if $53 is expensive or cheap.

And also if I order this do I need to get anything else to hook it up?

-Thanks, Mike
