notified of bios update (ROm family SSID 821D)  is this necessary and how do I install

The "notification" should have indicated the reasons for the release of the update, and should have given instructions on how to install.  Reread the notification.

 

Or, if you received such a "notification" via E-mail, be careful -- it could be a "scam" message that tries to get you to install some "malware" onto your system.
