That generally happens when you have tried to run a video that your operating system does not have the proper CODEC installed for the browser you are using.
Have you tried opening YouTube from a different browser?
What I mean is that if you are using Edge or Internet Explorer, try Firefox or Google Chrome instead.

Thanks for your response
I was trying with google.
Having moved to internet explorer, I am now getting a message saying that having tried, the attempt failed and the screen remains on the 'small' version of the video.
Any further thoughts?
