Pavilion dv7
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I just received a phone call from a foreign speaking man saying that he was from HP Technical Support  (866-756-0309)

(V325153609000065).  He said that he received a report from my computer and that it was infected with a Trojan virus and he needed to help me before it created a problem that would completely disable my computer.  I asked him which computer which stopped him for a minute. Then he said my Pavilion at which I said which one. Then he sid the 15 inch and I said which one as I have two.  He stopped and he said I should open my computer.

This all seemed extremely strange.  I asked him for the telephone number he was calling from and I would return his call because this sounded like a scam.  When he didn't give me a number I hung up.

Is HP aware of this?

Hi:

Yes, HP is aware of scammers posing as HP support staff.

No one from HP, Microsoft or any other reputable PC company will call you out of the blue, and tell you there is a problem with your PC, or that your PC has a virus, etc.

These scammers can be very clever--some knowing your name, phone number and even your PC's model and serial number, making it a bit difficult to tell the difference between a legitimate call and a scam.

But my 2nd sentence applies under any circumstance.

HP is asking customers that have been contacted by folks claiming to be from HP to submit the info to HP for further investigation.
