I have to replace my hard drive. It is wearing out.   However, I don't know how to proceed with this task.  In particular, what do I do about the Factory Image partition?   I did make recovery cds when I bought my computer.

Thanks.

Get a hard drive no less than the one you have now.  With the recovery disks you created you will be able to install your system.

Greetings

First, make a backup of your important documents. You can simply copy/paste to an external drive.

Next, image your drive with CloneZilla utility:  http://clonezilla.org/

CloneZilla is free, just download & burn a disk or make a startup usb. Read the documentation.

Now you should have an exact copy of your drive as an image on an external drive.

Next, determine the drive specs of you old disk, and find a duplicate. This is the easy way.

Replace the drive, restore your image, and you are done. Keep your file backup for emergency use.

Good luck.
