Is this model, already on Windows 7 Home Prem 64 Bit SP1, compatible with the Win 10 upgrade?

While the upgrade is possible from Win7, I would advise against it.

 

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the problem you're up against is that Microsoft only supplies drivers with the most basic functionality, and what you really need for FULL functionality is the specialized drivers written for the specific hardware found in your HP PC -- and unfortunately, there are no HP Win10 drivers for your PC. HP only guarantees Win10 compatibility for machines made after August, 2013. HP does not have any schedule indicating when, or IF, they will be producing drivers for the older machines.

This means that your PC is most likely NEVER going to be fully functional under Win10 because the drivers is needs for full functionality simply do not exist! 

 

However, if you want to EXPERIMENT with the upgrade to see how it goes, then do an image backup, first.

 

What I recommend is the following:
1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR)
2) Run MR and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive or USB stick
3) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CD

My experience is that MR, when using the High Compression option, typically can compress the saved image file to about 50% of the USED space in the OS partition.  This means if you have an 80GB OS partition, and 40GB is used, MR only needs about 20GB to store the image file.

 

NOW, you have the means to restore a full working system from the external drive or USB stick in only a few minutes.

Have fun experimenting with Win10!

Thank you so much.

 

I actually am the original owner of four HP machines, two laptops and two desktops.  The desktops are used at home, and the laptops when my wife and I travel.  They are all the same vintage, but different models.

 

May I pass along the specs of the remaining 3 to see if they are also going to be stuck with no upgrade path?

 

And one addtional question. Except for a few extra extended support years, is there any advantage to taking these machines fron Win 7  to 8/8.1  ???

 

 

Lastly, has anyone thought of capturing the advice, not to go to Win 10 for selected models in a simple table, that could be updated over time, as a reference for users that find their way to this BBS ?

Regarding the other HP PCs, just supply the detailed product numbers.  I'll use that info to check for HP Win10 drivers.

 

MS is still supporting Win8.1 in terms of security patches, so that is worth upgrading -- but since they removed the Start menu, you will need to consider alternatives.  Start7 (which costs $5) and ClassicShell are good examples of this.

 

Problems with Win10 Upgraded are not limited to hardware but also include software -- and the combinations that have problems could run into the millions -- far too many to incorporate into table.
