Pavilion p7-1297cb
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have a Pavilion I bought back in 2013 and this problem has persisted and I have decided finally to try to find out if there is a fix.

I leave it on when I am not at home because I have it connected to a Lacrosse weather station and it records at 10 min intervals. I will sometimes come home or even wake up in the morning to find the mouse cursor gone funny, looking sort of like a ladder or thermometer. As you move around to window corners, sides, tops and bottoms, it changes to other funny looking shapes. Once I start using the machine under this condition it is a matter of time before the machine freezes. Restarting it normally takes two tries as the first one does not take and of course I need to hold the power button to shut it down since it is frozen. Restarting it brings up the screen offering choices of normal, safe mode, etc. Normal works fine.

If I find the machine in this state and very quickly use the start menu to restart it, it will shut down but not restart. The blue light is on at the top of the machine but screen is dead. Then I can hold the power button to shut it down completely and start it cold and all is well.

I am running Win 7 home premium 64 bit.

Any suggestions? Takeing this to a repair shop does not seem to be an option as the problem is extremely intermittent.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Charles

Hi @chstoyer,

Thank you for joining HP Forums. I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand the mouse cursor goes funny and then the machine freezes, don't worry as I will be able to help you out, although, I will need a few details to provide an accurate solution:

* Does this happen only with the browser such as Internet Explorer, Chrome (if yes, which browser are you using)?

* Have you made any recent updates to your computer, software or hardware related?

* When was the last time it worked fine (date)?

Check the Mouse options under control panel:

Start → Control Panel → Mouse → Buttons tab. Check the box labelled "Use MS Office compatible scroll only." Also, check the box below labelled "Scroll in active window only."

Attempt using an alternate/external mouse.

Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your mouse:

Go to the Device Manager and select your mouse. Uninstall it and then restart your computer. During restart, your mouse driver will automatically be reinstalled.

* 1. Click on Start and type ‘Device Manager’.

* 2. Click Device Manager.

* 3. Click + sign next to Mouse.

* 4. Right-click on mouse entry and choose "uninstall".

* 5. Restart your computer.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to update the Bios and Chipset drivers, from the support website.
