HP Elite 8100 sff
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I friend of mine has an HP Elite 8100 SFF desktop with an i3 processor with 4gb of ram that he was trying to upgrade from windows 7 pro or business pro (if there's a difference) to windows 10 and while in the process wiped the hard drive and windows 10 did not finish the upgrade/install.  There was an issue but he's not sure what it was.  This attempt was several weeks ago.  After that it would not boot obviously and and beeped (red light) 5 times in patterns.  I think it is a ram issue.  Would the windows 10 upgrade cause the ram  to go bad because it couldn't handle it?  There is also no media recovery for the OS.  Do they still make it for this pc?  Thanks in advance.

Hi:

Windows should not cause the memory to go bad.

The first thing to do for that problem would be to remove and firmly reseat all memory modules.

If that fails to resolve the problem, remove all modules but one, and test each one individually in the black slot closest to the processor.  The one that causes the PC to beep 5 times is bad and needs to be replaced.

If that fails to resolve the problem, most likely the system board is bad because it is doubtful all the memory modules could be defective.

If you live in the USA/Canada, call HP at this number to order recovery media.  Have the serial number of the PC handy to give to the customer services rep.

Thank you.  I removed both 2gb modules and put one back in the black slot.  It stopped beeping.  Now when I boot it up, it gets past the HP screen and reboots.

You're very welcome.

That may be due to the operating system being corrupt.

Shut the PC down and unplug the data connector to the hard drive.

Now power it back on.

The PC should boot to the BIOS and report no hard drive, or words to that effect.

It shouldn't reboot if there isn't something else wrong.

Did the PC beep again when you put both memory modules back in?

If so, then you need to isolate the one memoy module that is bad.

Test each one alone in the black memory slot.

I did test one of the modules and it was bad, so I just left that one out.  I just got lucky with the one I chose to put back in. lol  I will shut down the pc and unplug the data cable to the hard drive after a while.  I have to leave for work.  It will be later on tonight.  If it comes up "normal" would it do any good to re-install any drivers now via usb or wait till after the install of the OS or is this even an option?  Thanks Again!!!!!

You're very welcome.

If the PC just reports no hard drive connected, reinstall the operating system and you should be OK.

You could reinstall W10 if it was working OK previous to the crash.

HP Recommended

It had windows 7 enterprise on it before the crash.  I would need to re-install that then upgrade to 10, right?

HP Recommended

You can clean reinstall W10 if you had already previously upgraded to W10 and it was successfully activated.

If you did not make W10 installation media, you can use the Media Creation tool at the link below and either download the file to make a bootable USB flash drive, or the ISO file which you can burn to a DVD (use the Brun ISO file option on your DVD burning program so the DVD is bootable).
