The Shut Down tab on the start menu always indicates that there ae updates available. This persists even after manually checking for and downloading updates.
Then Microsoft Fixit was run, the computer was rebooted, and 5 updates were installed. But the start menu still indicates that there are updates available.
What could be causing this?
How should this be dealt with?
Are there certain updates which are not successfully installed, and if so could this effect the security of the computer?

Hi,
Go here and download "Never 10".
Run the program. It will shut down the Win 10 forced upgrade.

Greetings,
Did you run this Microsoft Fixit?
Try the manual reset update component instruction to see if this helps.
Run a check disk using these instructions.
Have you tried a System Restore?
Cheers!

Ran Check Disk but no change in Start Menu shut Down tab. Upon computer restart there was a notification that updates were available, and this turned out to be Windows 10.
When your Fixit link was selected a notification for installation of Windows 10 occurred. The only selections for the user were to "Schedule itfor later" or to "Start the upgrade now." There was no option to close this popup notification, and Control-Alt-Delete did not work for this either. So I pulled the power plug and then restarted the computer. A popup appeared offering optional updates, which I accepted and ran.
I anticipate trying your other suggestions, but am beginning to suspect this is an aggressive attempt to get me to put Windows 10 on my machine. Every time I turn around I get this offer.
Of course, I don't care for such an installation on a six year old computer. If i can continue to install the upgrades needed to maintain security this should be sufficient untill I replace the entire system.
What do you thinkc of this assessment?

Never10 apppears to have worked. I haven't gotten harassed since runing it about 3 days ago.
The upgrate problem appeared to resolve as well, at least initially I waited 2 days to make sure before giving this feedback, and it once again reared its ugly head.
For now I'm going to keep up all antivirus and firewall protections, as always, and use Private Browsing in case there is a security update that could effect the integrity of this machine.
Thanks for your feedback.
