Envy 20 Model 20-d034
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

PC Operated after upgrading to Windows 10 until ran a windows update. Now PC is useless. Power is on and blower runs but there is no POST,  no beeps or anything on the screen. I've done a hard reset, cleared the BIOS, tried repeated F11 key taps imeadietly after turning on. Same with ESC key but nothing appears on the screen. I tried a bootable disc but it doesn't try to boot from the optical drive, even with the HDD out of the system.

I've removed the HDD and saved everything on another computer so wiping the disk is ok if I could recover the original OS from the recovery partition. I suspect Microsoft messed up the BIOS. Does anyone have a suggestion other than replacing the MB?

Hi @rfinhc,

I thank you for your response. Great troubleshooting and fantastic analysis of the issue. Kudos to you for that. 🙂  If you need to change the system board on your computer by contacting a  local Best Buy or Staples technician, I request you to be judicious about it as the cost could be prohibitive and close to the cost of a new computer.

Please check that before upgrading. I am doing this by keeping your best interest in mind. as we don't live in Bill Gates neighborhood. However, if it pans out in your favor and the cost is reasonable then you could change the motherboard on it. But to answer your basic question, it is not possible to restore Windows 8 from the Bios on your PC.

This is because the operating system is a piece of software and Bios is restricted to support for hardware parts of the computer and has nothing to do with the operating system of the unit.

However, I will send you a link for you to order the recovery media online: http://support.hp.com/us-en/mediaorder/HP-ENVY-20-All-in-One-Desktop-PC-series/5295884/model/5296787...

Please follow the instructions on the screen to order the recovery media wich is Windows 8, the original Operating system that came with the computer.

Trust me I've done all I can to help by keeping your Best interest in mind. :)You've been simply superb to work with and it has been an absolute privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂 I hope things work great for you. 🙂

Thank you for responding to my problem. I have followed the recommended steps to the point of restoring the BIOS using the power button and the Windows logo +B keys. Since this is an AiO PC it has wireless keyboard & mouse.

My question is will the keyboard work even though the computer has not POSTed?  If not, will a USB keyboard work under these conditions?

Hi @rfinhc,

I reviewed the post comprehensively. Spectacular diagnosis and stupendous analysis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

You need to remove the wireless keyboard, mouse and USB dongle first as it will not work outside of windows.

Then perform a hard reset from this link: http://support.hp.com/za-en/document/c01463028

After that connect only a wired USB keyboard to the AIO. Then try the steps to restore the bios from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-23-All-in-One-Desktop-PC-series/6528335/model/652977...

Once the computer is up and running you could switch to the wireless keyboard and mouse.

Hope this helps.  Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂  Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂

This PC may not have the BIOS emergency recovery tool installed. I removed the USB dongle and installed a USB keyboard. I tried several times Hard resetting then using the Power / Win logo + B keys without success. I appreciate your responses and am open to any further suggestions.

Hi @rfinhc,

At this time it looks like a hardware issue with the unit. Superb troubleshooting, though. Hats off to you for that. 🙂

Please contact HP phone support to get the unit serviced by following these steps:

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect

Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number, Case number and phone number appear.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer's warranty will cover repair services for you.

Please let me know how this goes.

Thank you again for your rapid responses and excellent advice. Unfortunately, I was informed by Customer Service that this AiO PC is now considered obsolete. HP will no longer supply parts for it or service it. That surprised me but then again we are living in a exponentially advancing technical environment.

I do have one question. If I were to install another MB (assuming I could find one for a reasonable price), I would not want Windows 10 to start for fear of repeating the issue. I would enter the BIOS immediately after powering on. Is it possible from the BIOS to restore the system to the original Windows 8?
