Hello,
I just purchased a HP Touchsmart (product # QU156AA#ABA, model # 520-1031) and am having problems backing up my system. I have been trying for 2 days now to create recovery disks and bakc up discs and the windows back-up program copies up to about 31% and then tells me that it can't complete the back-up. When I try the HP recovery creation it tells me that the recovery partition can not be found. My HP_Recovery D: has been in red it seems since i got it and now I am not sure what to do! Any help would be appreciated!

Hello and thanks for joining the HP Forums. For this issue you will need recovery disks to be sent to you from HP support. If you have recently purchased this unit it may still be in warranty. Please contact our support center and provide them the same information that you provided in your original post here and as long as your unit is less than 5 years old they can order recovery disks for you. Once you recieve the disks you will want to back up all of your personal files and run a full recovery to resolve this issue. The recovery disks that are sent by HP will re-create the recovery partition on your hard drive so that it should work properly for you from that point forward. You can contact HP support at:

But how will i be able to back up my files if the program won't let me back them up? Also, if I do the system recovery, will it uninstall items such as my hp beats audio, HP Recovery Manager, and windows 7 software? When i looked at the [roduct listing it stated no for many items for recovery reinstallation.

You can back up your files without using the recovery program. You should be able to open the CD/DVD burning software on your machine and back up your files and folders using the "create a data disk" option in this program. If your machine is still in warranty our support group at the number I provided in the previous post will be able to help you complete this task if you need assistance. If your machine is no longer in warranty they will be able to provide other options.
When you get the recovery disks from HP and run them here is what will happen:
1. Your hard drive will be wiped clean. (All data removed from the drive.)
2. The recovery disk will re-create the recovery partition and re-install all of the original software. This process returns your computer software to exactly the same as it was the day you bought it and removed it from the box. It will have the original windows system that came on your machine (if it is new that is probably Windows 7) and all other software such as Beats Audio that came on your machine originally will be reinstalled. All HP software (recovery manager, HPSA, etc.) will be re-loaded via the recovery disks.

Great! I was worried that I would lose some of my features and personal files. Do you know how long that usually takes to get to me? I just bought the computer last week so it should still be under warranty. Is there a cost if the system is under warranty?

The disks usually get to you pretty quickly. I can't tell you exactly how long it should take, but the agent at the support number can give you that information. If there is a technical issue that is causing you to need the recovery and the agent is unable to help you create user created recovery disks then the agent will determine based on the information they have gathered and troubleshooting they have performed if there will be a cost for the disks. I apologize that I can't provide a more clear answer on those two questions, but please contact the support number and they can provide that information for you.

Hello and thanks for joining HP forums. When you run the recovery partition of your computer, it will erase everything that is located on the c: drive and then re-install the windows operating system so that the c: drive is like it was when you bought your computer new as far as the software is concerned. There is an option to back up the files before running the recovery; however, this option only backs up certain file types and locations and may or may not back up all of your personal files. I always recommend backing up any personal files to a disc yourself before running any type of recovery to assure that you will not lose any of your important files. You can read more about recovery options here:
