Yes. The process consist of bootong up laptop with 1st of 2 DVD recovery. message then appears hard disk preperation- please wait. The COMPAQ Recovery screen appeaers with Progress bar which has timer for Time elapsed at one end and percentage number at the other end. When timer gets to 49 mins 33 sec a small error message appears which says Error! Cannot copy file X
RELOAD\BASE_03 INP from disk Please eject disc and clean and try again. ABORT RETRY IGNORE.
If it is the disk that is faulty , is there a way of fixing this problem without them.

Hello c0rnel,
My computer is HP Media Centre PC m7377a
SER No. [text removed for privacy]
SYSTEM No. EP019AA#ABG
O/S Windows XP Media Centre Edition 2005
Not sure if you still around as the post is quite old. Or if this msg will get to you or just be posted.
You seem to know your stuff around this area. I have just followed your instructions and was quite exited as it seemed to be working for a minute. A route I haven't tried, I was stuck.
But I keep ending up with the same result albeit sometimes on different screens. Msg CD/DVD read error!
I originally attempted a full recovery, from the partition on the hard drive. Following instructions from the system. I happened to have recovery disc 1 in the drive at the time. It some how seemed to automatically switch from a hard drive recovery to a disc recovery?
The reason I opted for a hard drive partition recovery was because I was aware there where read/write issues with my CD/DVD Drive. This was one of the main reasons, amongst others why I attempted the recovery.
I now am stuck. can't get a recovery from the hard drive or disc. If I could sort out the above disc error I'm sure it would complete the recovery.
I don't think it would be the recovery discs at fault, as I had the same problem with many discs before attempt at recovery.
Any ideas or even information as to what I can attempt to repair this, or what components are involved in reading or writing to a disc.
I am aware the DVD Drive could be faulty but In four years its done nothing much at all the last two years it has not worked? that said I just tried a few discs before recovery as i had to backup to something. It still did not work but would play the odd music disc?
In desperate attempt I swapped the drive for a much older one with same connections. but was same results can,t read
I feel? thats whats inside the computer that reads the disc is at fault? but I don't know what that item is?
Thank you for reading this msg, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Andrew

Does following these steps mean that pictures and software already installed will be lost ?

Here is how it started:
My computer got very very slow (happened in the past too, but I was able to solve it by the recovery discs that I bought from hp). However, this time it didn't work and I'm keep getting the same problem. I done this with full recovery (F) and R may 6 times so far, no luck.
