Multiple HP Pavilion p7-1080t running Windows 7 64bit with the same problem
Cannot get the SM bus driver working.
We read the following article:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docnam
Tried doing the "update driver"- in Windows, this failed
Then went to AMD and downloaded new ATI Chipset drivers from:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Page
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/12-4_vista_win7_32-64_
It appears the AMD update installs the AMD Catalyst Manager, not clear if it actually upgrades the chipset drivers or not
The SM Bus still shows up on the device manager as:
"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver."
I assume this is why our smart media reader's are not working ?
This must be a problem for a few thousand other people, but still haven't been able to make it work.
What now ?

Did the machines arrive in the missing driver state or have you done a clean install of Windows on them?
Have you tried the ATI driver from your support page with no results? HERE

Not sure if the PC's arrived like that, we always have to blow the HP build away and replaced it with clean Win 7 64 bit install.
What moron would leave the standard HP Win 7 build with all its freeware, adware, clutterware, crapware and tons of junk loaded? I have heard horror stories about trying to get rid of the software crap that HP loads onto the machine. They have a few trojans loaded into the build too.
The clean install of Win 7 64 bit works perfect except for the Smart Media Bus driver issue - I bet there is a tweak they do on their own Windows 7 build to get it working, a secret driver as it were, cannot find the solution published anywhere - wish someone at HP would chip in.
There is no ATI driver on the support page for this PC, so I am not sure what your are referring to.

UPDATE:
Tried to do a number of upgrades to solve the problem, including a BIOS upgrade and I just hosed the machine....grrrrrrr.
All I wanted to do is get the Smart Card Reader working and now I have trashed the machine.
Reset the cmos, cannot get the PC to start. Sent out for a new MB. This is a bad day.
Even when I get the new MB, still will have the SM Bus driver problem, I know this as we have it on the other 9 Office PC's too.

Here are the specs for the HP Pavilion p7-1080t CTO Desktop Computer and its IPISB-CU Carmel Motherboard. Software and driver downloadsHERE for the p7-1080t can be found. As this system uses an Intel chipset and not an AMD/ATI chipset, please refer to this Intel webpage about chipsets and the SMBus controller.

Thanks Frank.
The information that it is in fact an Intel chipset is at odds with the DXDIAG that says ATI.
As soon as I get the new motherboard (As the current one is now toast because of the failed BIOS upgrade) i will test.
thx again
