Surface Test Scan Failed

Okay, I am pretty sure that this is the correct forum for this. Anyways, My computer did its monthly Hardware scan and everything passed except for one thing. On the Surface Scan Test, the first one listed, it said it failed. Error Code HD535-2W. I looked at the detailed test log and this is what appeared.

Error Message:       There was an error reading sector 6463800.

Test Finished:       Failed (Error code: HD535-2W)

Any insight on a solution?

Re: Surface Test Scan Failed

It could not read one sector, this could mean a failing hard drive, or that just that sector is corrupted enough it cannot be read, there is software than can correct the latter.

Spinrite, considered the best $89

HDD Regenerator  $59

http://www.dposoft.net/

probably cheaper to replace the drive

Re: Surface Test Scan Failed

Okay, I don't have a disk to reinstall vista. So buying a new HD seems to be out of the question. From what I read is that the less expensive one with regenerate the corrupted file and everything should be okay. Is this a guaranteed fix and will it permanent ?

Also, my computer runs perfectly fine. How long til it crashes?

Re: Surface Test Scan Failed

You can possibly make recovery discs

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&rule=69&product=3696841&docna...

Nothing is guaranteed since nobody knows if the sector is physically damaged or just corrupt and repairable, physical damage is not repairable, this is why I suggest a new hard drive considering the $59 gamble.

If you cannot make the discs you can buy a set for a reasonable fee

If it is physical or electronics damage it could fail to load windows at any time, back up your important data to an external drive or CD/DVD

Re: Surface Test Scan Failed

If I would get a new HD I would have to install 7/vista/XP. Correct? If that is correct I would have to buy one of those since I currently do not own a copy. I am currently trying the demo of the HDD Regenerator to see if I have anything that can be repaired.

Do you have any suggestions on a HD? 500g should be enough considering that my current is 600g and I am only using 300g.

Sorry if I am being a hassle...
