Windows 7 does not reqognize external drives

After upgrading form Vista to Win 7 I ahve two issues.  First my Device Manager keeps resetting.  That may be related to my second issue.  The device manager knows that I have two external drives connected but Explorer doen not.  Sometimes it does but mostly it does not.

Windows 7 has a new feature. Unless media is in there (ODD or card reader slots), it will not show you the drive in the left window in Explorer. I used to hate it when I accidentally clicked on the A: floppy or card reader slot (e.g. empty SD slot) and windows gives me an error. I think MS got that feedback and redesigned it that way to stop the error from coming up.

Try going to Windows update and install the critical updates. Take a look at the optional updates to see if there is one that is related to your issue.
