I have a Compaq 615 and when i plug my headset into the jack the sound still comes out of my laptops speakers.
I have tried setting the headphones to default playback device but the system won't allow it.
All drivers are upto date and the headphones work fine as a communication device i.e Skype , Ventrillo etc..
OS - Windows 7 home prem
Driver - IDT HIGH DEF AUDIO CODEC
Can anyone help?

I had the sanne problem. Its the IDT drivers and windows 7 that dont like eachother. But I found out how the IDT drivers work.
Normally they tap the sound from your speakers to your plugged in sound divice. But If you enable the option that divices will take exclusive control over a sound divice this will conflict.
Therefor all you have to do is disable this option:
go to playback divices (richtclick the speakers in the traybar)
Go to the properties of a divice
Go to advanced
Disable the option called:
Allow applications to take exclusive control of this divice
repeat this for all audio divices.
restart your pc.
This also explains why setting some options in media player helps for some people.

I did exactly what you have said, but I still have the same problem.
Software IDT does not allow me to change headphones as default device.
Any other suggestions?

I had this exact problem. I went into systems management, manage devices. I deleted the IDT sound device codecs and checked the Delete drivers checkbox. After that I restarted, and when it got back up, I had the sound back the way they were before, headphones and speakers.
I think what happened when I did this is that I got the default Windows 7 device, High Definition Sound Device, instead of the IDT.

Just an update if anyone is still having this problem.
I used the HP Support Assistant, then clicked on Troubleshoot
Then Performance & Software
Then Software, Drivers & BIOS
The troubleshoot had an Action to repair/install the IDT Driver
Clicked the repair button, updated the driver
Then did a restart and it's working fine now

I have the same problem and none of the advices given here seem to solve the problem. I have re-installed drivers, but it doesn't help. Diagnostic utilities don't detect anything wrong with the driver(s).
